Why Your Retry Logic Is Lying to You
Exponential backoff is not a personality trait. Most retry logic just hides a design problem with more patience.

IN PLAIN ENGLISH
The point of a retry
A retry is useful when the dependency is likely to recover. It becomes a problem when the retry policy keeps calling a system that is failing for a structural reason.
REFERENCE IMPLEMENTATION
typescriptThe retry needs an exit
for (let attempt = 0; attempt < 3; attempt += 1) {
try {
return await dependency.request();
} catch (error) {
if (!isTransient(error)) throw error;
await delay(250 * 2 ** attempt);
}
}
throw new RetryExhaustedError();The stop condition is the important part. Without one, this is just a slow way to fail.

One retry can be useful. The question is what happens next.
Retry logic is supposed to buy you time while a transient problem resolves itself. Half the time, it's actually buying the downstream system time to fail somewhere else instead.
The tell
If your retry count is set to a number nobody can explain, that number is folklore, not engineering.
What actually helped
Circuit breakers, not more retries. Retries treat the symptom. Breakers treat the blast radius.
